In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the first Northern band, the music archives at NIU were scoured in search of memorabilia and
facts about the Huskie Band of the past. In 1997 the Huskie Marching Band re-introduced Hail to the Huskies, a school march dating from
the year 1940. The manuscripts core to this long-forgotten march lists the composer's name as "Charles Porter." Porter was merely the
pen-name of the famous band composer/arranger Paul Yoder. Hail to the Huskies is written in traditional march style and as far as
records show, never had any lyrics.
Hail, NIU! (WAV)
The updated version of the Alma Mater — written by former NIU band director Dr. Wilbur Smith and English professor Orville Baker —
originated in 1957 and debuted at a campus Pops Concert in January, 1961. Smith wrote the music and most of the lyrics — with some
help by Baker. The Alma Mater can be heard each day on campus from the bells of the Holmes Student Center tower. The Huskie Band
performs both an instrumental and an instrumental/vocal version of the Alma Mater. Out of respect for our school and the ideals of
collegiate life, the Huskie Marching Band conclude every performance with a singing of the Alma Mater. This particular arrangement
was created by Margaret Kohler.
NIU Fanfare (MP3) // Preview Song:
The NIU Fanfare was premiered in the fall of 1996 by the Huskie Marching Band, and is now the traditional opener to the pre-game show
at all football games. The fanfare was composed by Al Greener and is based upon melodies from the Huskie Fight Song and the Alma Mater,
